Located in Avon, MA, Scratch-Art Company,
is the manufacturer of more than one hundred and fifty products
sold in the Toy, Craft and School Supply markets worldwide.
How was Scratch-Art® started?
Art educator, Nathan Polsky, founded Scratch-Art Co., in 1964.
He combined his experience in teaching art to children with his
comprehensive knowledge of art materials and his creativity to
develop innovative products first sold in the school supply marketplace.
Before there was Scratch-Art paper
Children have long enjoyed Scratch-Art! In classrooms across
the country, children had been creating pictures by scratching
into crayon covered paper, which they prepared by rubbing a thick
layer of wax crayons on paper until the entire sheet was covered
with colors. The prepared colorful waxy surface was then coated
with a thickly rubbed layer of black crayon or ink, until the
color was completely covered. This was a laborious task. By simply
using a stick, designs were scratched or etched into the black
surface revealing the colors beneath. The contrasts created were
stunning! The process is a fun filled activity with a magical
colorful surprise in every scratched line. However, a by-product
of this technique was the mess produced by flecks of black wax
everywhere!
How is Scratch-Art paper made?
After a great deal of technical experimentation, Mr. Polsky discovered
an effective method for manufacturing Scratch-Art® paper,
eliminating the mess of crayons. Now students could achieve beautiful
Scratch-Art pictures instantly! He created a high quality paper,
which is printed in two steps. First, each sheet is printed with
a colored design. Then each sheet is coated with a unique formula
of black ink, which can be easily removed by scratching its surface
with a wood drawing stick. This paper, now known as Scratch-Art
Paper, is clean, safe, and easy-to-use. Scratch-Art is a pleasurable
and creative method for picture making, and has become a standard
in all elementary school education. Teachers and children everywhere
know and love Scratch-Art!
The growth of Scratch-Art Co., much more
than paper
Scratch-Art Co., opened its doors in 1964 with three products
and today sells more than one hundred and fifty different items.
The mission to create unique, high quality, creativity products
for artists, teachers, students and children of all ages that
are educational, safe and easy-to-use continues to inspire the
development of new products. Today that mission has led to the
expansion of the educational products line to include over seventy-five
different Scratch-Art papers and scratchboards, innovative printmaking
products, crayons, tools and many more proprietary art and craft
materials. Scratch-Art makes products for people of all ages,
abilities, and skill levels-truly for ages 5 to 95!
