Supplies:
Scratch-Brite® Gold Scratchboard
Scratch knives
Colored photocopies of teachers, administrators, custodians, paraprofessionals
Glue

Introduction:
Students preview a PowerPoint presentation focusing on the detail work of Gustav Klimt.
The design principle known as Emphasis is the focus.
Provide Descriptive Line worksheet as a reference.
Practice different types of patterns on sketch paper.
Demonstrate proper use of scratch materials.

Procedures:
Select a teacher and cut out their head and hands.  Glue these pieces to the scratchboard keeping the figure as the focal point in their design.

Begin by scratching out an organic shape that suggests a garment, keeping in mind the garment should not be realistic.

You will now have two areas to fill…the garment and the background.

One of these areas needs to be richly patterned using lines and textures.  The other area will be less patterned so that one is emphasized over the other.

Protect the unscratched area of the scratchboard covered with a clean sheet of paper to prevent oil transfer from your fingers.

Fill one area, then the other.  Refer to the Descriptive Line worksheet.

Make sure that the two areas are distinctively different.  If not, then add more detail to one of them.
